SCMA/Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Libraries
a project of the
SCMA Education Fund
a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, tax-exempt pursuant to
Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3)

SCMA has established the SCMA Education Fund (the Fund) as a California non-profit corporation for the general purpose of promoting education about, and encouraging the use of, mediation and other methods of conflict resolution to resolve disputes. The Fund will raise money to fund its efforts by seeking contributions from individuals and organizations. The Fund's mission includes, but is not limited to, funding the establishment of the SCMA/Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Libraries throughout Southern California.

The SCMA/Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Libraries Project (the Project) both honors, and is the vision of, Forrest S. (Woody) Mosten, the 1999 SCMA Cloke-Millen Peacemaker of the Year and the 2006 SCMA Randall Lowery Lecturer who keynoted the SCMA Annual Conference. Forrest S. Mosten The Project's purpose is to provide initial funding for libraries, community mediation centers, and other non-profit organizations to establish mediation libraries to serve the public throughout Southern California. These libraries will house consumer friendly books, videos, and computer learning modules for people who are interested in learning about and using mediation, negotiation, and other peacemaking alternatives to resolve conflict in their personal lives and in their communities.

SCMA shares Woody's vision of establishing mediation libraries throughout Southern California and of making mediation and other forms of conflict resolution accessible to all. To make this vision a reality, SCMA has set up a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt corporation, the SCMA Education Fund, to raise funds for it.

Each non-profit organization applying for SCMA funding will determine how the Project can best support mediation and meet the needs of its particular clientele. What constitutes a "library" will thus be specific to each location. Institutions interested in establishing a mediation library as part of this Project will apply to the Fund for a grant. Grant Application Applications will be evaluated and grants will be awarded by the SCMA/Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Libraries Project Committee.

The Western Justice Center in Pasadena has already announced its SCMA/Forrest S. Mosten Conflict Resolution Library, which will focus on the prevention of youth violence. Press Release Many other institutions have expressed interest in establishing mediation libraries at their locations and will be applying for Fund grants, including the MLK Dispute Resolution Center; Los Angeles County Law Library; California State University Dominguez Hills Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding Program; Levitt & Quinn Family Law Center; Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) of the Los Angeles County Bar Association; and the Sunday Free Legal Clinic (First AME Church/Temple Isaiah/UCLA School of Law).

We need SCMA member support to raise the funds to meet these requests.

Depending on the specific needs of the institution, a donation of $50 could provide one or two books; $500, a shelf of books; $1,500, a computer, printer, and DVD player or library furniture; $2,500, staff time to set up the library. A donation of $10,000 could provide the entire library. Donations in any amount are most welcome. Woody has already made his own generous donation and has pledged to provide additional matching funds to motivate others.

The Project will be funded completely by tax-deductible donations, which will be allocated specifically to this Project rather than to the general operations of SCMA. A special dedicated checking account for the Project has been opened to receive donations. Click on the link to open a form to use to send in your contribution by check or credit card. Donation Form
