William Ury, co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation, is one of the world’s leading experts on negotiation and mediation.
He is co-author with Roger Fisher and Bruce Patton of Getting to Yes, a fourteen-million- copy bestseller translated into over thirty-five languages, and the author of Getting Past No, The Power of a Positive No, The Third Side and, most recently, the award-winning Getting to Yes with Yourself.
Over the last 35 years, Dr. Ury has served as a negotiation adviser and mediator in conflicts ranging from labor strikes and boardroom battles to civil wars in the Middle East, Latin America, and the former Soviet Union. During the Cold War, Ury served as a consultant to the Crisis Management Center at the White House, helping to create nuclear risk reduction centers. He has taught negotiation and mediation to tens of thousands of corporate executives, labor leaders, diplomats, and military officers around the world.
Ury is founder of the Abraham Path Initiative, which seeks to bring people together across cultures by opening a long-distance walking route in the Middle East that retraces the footsteps of Abraham and his family. ABC’s Christiane Amanpour calls the Abraham Path “an unprecedented initiative to break down barriers and foster communication in the most divided region of the world.” He has a popular TED talk about the Abraham Path, entitled “The Walk from No to Yes.” He is also co-founder of the Climate Parliament, which unites parliamentarians from around the world with civil society to bring about a transition to renewable energy.

Lee Jay Berman began as a full-time mediator over 23 years ago, and has successfully mediated over 2,200 matters. He is a Distinguished Fellow with the International Academy of Mediators, and a Charter Diplomat with the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. Kenneth Cloke is Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution and a mediator, arbitrator, attorney, coach, consultant, and trainer, specializing in communication, negotiation, and resolving complex multi-party conflicts, including community, grievance and workplace disputes, collective bargaining negotiations, organizational and school conflicts, sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits, and public policy disputes, and in designing preventative conflict resolution systems for organizations. He has done work in conflict resolution all over the world, and is a former President and co-founder of Mediators Beyond Borders. He is a nationally recognized speaker and a prolific author of many journal articles and books, including Mediation: Revenge and the Magic of Forgiveness, Mediating Dangerously, The Crossroads of Conflict, and Conflict Revolution. Professor Mary B. Culbert is the Director of The Center For Conflict Resolution, where she previously served as a Senior Mediator supervising students. She is a bilingual certified mediator and a 1984 graduate of Loyola Law School. In 1993, Ms. Culbert began serving as a community and court mediator and received the “Rookie of the Year Award” from the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Services. She returned to Loyola in 1994 as an adjunct professor of law and founding director of the Disability Mediation Center of the Western Law Center for Disability Rights (currently the Disability Rights Legal Center). After practicing law for several years, Ms. Culbert became a bilingual certified mediator and has mediated extensively since 1992 in numerous community, government agency and court programs. She served as a resource to local, state and federal agencies regarding the design and implementation of mediation programs. She sat on the California State Bar ADR Committee and chaired its Ethics Subcommittee since its inception in 1997 until September 2001, and still sits as an advisor to that Committee today.
Ms. Culbert has served on numerous boards, committees and mediation panels over the past 22 years. She has trained and lectured extensively on mediation skills, advanced mediation techniques, disability mediation and legal issues in mediation. More recently, she served an appointment to the Judicial Council, Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee, ADR Subcommittee Working Group on Uniform Procedures for Addressing Complaints about Court-Program Mediators. She was recognized in the “TOP NEUTRALS” Supplement to the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals and to the Sacramento Recorder, in the section on “Community Mediators: taking it to the streets” in 2007. In 2009, she received the Ester Soriano Peacemaker of the Year Award from Los Angeles County DRPA Program Community Mediators, and in 2010, the Ester Soriano Award for Excellence in Community Mediation from the California Dispute Resolution Council. In the summer of 2011, Professor Culbert provided mediation training to a group of high-ranking judges, attorneys and law professors in Bangladesh. In 2012-13, she created a new model, and clinic, for providing Collaborative Mediation Divorce Services in conjunction with the Los Angeles Collaborative Family Law Association.
Kim Deck, Esq.
One of the nation’s most experienced and accomplished mediators, Kim Deck, Esq. has devoted two decades to a full-time dispute resolution practice. Kim is a proud member of Judicate West, and was previously on the panel at JAMS. She serves as mediator and neutral fact-finder, and has successfully resolved over 4,500 cases, causing the Los Angeles Daily Journal to name her Top 40 California Neutral. Prior to her neutral work, she worked as a trainer and consultant with Vantage Partners (founded by faculty of the Harvard Program on Negotiation), and she served as Associate General Counsel and Manager of the Employment Dispute Resolution and Training Group at JAMS. John R. Denny, Esq.
John R. Denny graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (B.A., Economics, 1980) and Loyola Law School (J.D., cum laude, 1994). At Loyola Law School, he was a member of the Order of the Coif and St. Thomas More Honor Society. He was a member of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review (1992-1994). He was admitted to the California Bar (1994), U.S. District Court, Central District of California (1994), and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (1995). He has been named a Certified Specialist in Family Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.

He is the developer of the New Ways for Mediation℠ method for resolving disputes with high-conflict people. He is on the part-time faculty at the Pepperdine University School of Law where he teaches the Psychology of Conflict Communication for the past several years, and on the part-time faculty of the National Judicial College. He is a visiting lecturer at Monash University Law Chambers in Melbourne, Australia every September for the past six years.
Alfred (Al) W. Gerisch, Jr., Esq.
Al Gerisch brings more than 40 years of litigation practice to the dispute resolution arena. His practice focused on premises liability, personal auto, trucking and transportation litigation as well as employment disputes. He has tried over 40 cases to verdict and has mediated in excess of 200 cases representing parties to those proceedings. As a litigator for over 40 years his clients included Greyhound Lines, First Group, Lancer Insurance Co., National Interstate Insurance Co., Gardner Trucking, and LAUSD. His trials included defending Keanu Reeves in an assault and battery case to a defense verdict, LAUSD in a wrongful death case to a defense verdict, and Greyhound Lines in a serious injury case to a defense verdict. His other trials included matters involving a variety of personal injury cases as well as employment related matters.
As a mediator and settlement officer for various courts he had a success rate of over 80% in resolving those matters to conclusion.
In the dispute resolution arena, he has been appointed as a settlement officer for the Los Angeles Superior Court, the 4th District Court of Appeals, the First Friday mediation program for the Palm Springs Superior Court, and has been both an arbitrator and mediator on the superior court panel.
He has completed over 60 hours of mediation training through the Strauss Institute at Pepperdine School of Law where he has honed techniques to assist the parties in reaching through facilitation or evaluation a fair and equitable resolution.
Mr. Gerisch attended USC and obtained a BS in Accounting and thereafter attended Loyola Law School. After law school he clerked for a district judge at the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles before joining the La Follette, Johnson, De Haas, Fesler & Ames firm.

Diane Karpman, Esq.
Diane L. Karpman specializes in legal ethics and professional responsibility. She is ethics counsel to several law firms and has been appointed by the L.A. Superior Court as a consultant in class actions. Ana Sambold is an attorney, mediator, arbitrator, trainer and a passionate advocate for ADR. Jan Frankel Schau, Esq

Her practice is devoted to Family Law, and includes litigation, pre- and post-marital agreements, mediation and minor’s counsel work. Elizabeth is certified as a Specialist in Family Law by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. Los Angeles Magazine recognized her as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2006 – 2007 and 2009 – 2012 and a Super Lawyer for 2013. She has represented over 100 children in contested custody matters in Probate and Family Court.

Maria Simpson, Ph.D.
Maria Simpson, Ph.D. has been an organizational conflict consultant for over 20 years. She has worked with executives to develop their leadership skills and with leadership teams to develop more effective decision-making processes. Among her clients are Bank of America, Toyota Financial Services, and Easter Seals Southern California, as well as city agencies and universities. Her executive experience at the NY Academy of Sciences, The Conference Board, and the New School for Social Research has given her an in-depth understanding of how organizations work.
Maria currently serves on the Boards of Empathia Pacific, a national EAP, and the SCMA Education Foundation, which she has chaired since 2013. She has served on a variety of other boards and was an officer of the SCMA, from which she received the SCMA President’s Award in 2012.

Heidi Tuffias, Esq.

She served on the Los Angeles Superior Court ADR Committee from 2009-2013 and currently volunteers for the Los Angeles Superior Court as a Daily Settlement Officer in the Central District, Compton and Santa Monica courts. Ms. Tuffias was honored by the Los Angeles Superior Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Program for her outstanding volunteer contributions in 2008 and 2011.
Ms. Tuffias currently has her own dispute resolution practice focusing on mediation, consulting to mediation and collaborative matters and prenuptial agreements in West Los Angeles. To enhance her understanding of the psychology of conflict resolution, she is pursuing her Master’s Degree in psychology at Antioch University, Los Angeles and expects to graduate by the end of 2018. Ms. Tuffias speaks and writes frequently regarding family law, mediation and collaborative law.
Dr. Michele A. L. Villagran
Dr. Michele A. L. Villagran is based in the Los Angeles area and serves as a President and CEO of CulturalCo focusing in areas of cultural competency, competitive intelligence, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence. Additionally, Dr. Villagran is a Lecturer with University of North Texas, and LIS Coordinator for the University of North Texas Master of Library & Information Science programs. She is a certified cultural intelligence and unconscious bias facilitator through the Cultural Intelligence Center. Dr. Villagran has more than 20 years of experience including work in both the public and private sectors. She earned her undergraduate degree in Management and International Business from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, her M.L.S. degree in Legal Informatics from the University of North Texas, and her M.B.A. in Strategic Management from the University of North Texas. At Pepperdine University, she completed a Certificate in Dispute Resolution, her Masters of Dispute Resolution and her Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership with her dissertation focusing on cultural intelligence at Pepperdine University.

Mike began his career at Ringler Associates in 1996. He holds the industry’s highest professional designation from Notre Dame University as a certified Masters Structured Settlement Specialist, and is the managing owner/broker of the Costa Mesa office of Ringler with more than 30 years of experience in Structured Settlements, claim s and risk management. Mike specializes in settling Worker’s Compensation, Products Liability, General Liability, Wrongful Death/Survivor, Mass Tort, Elder Abuse, Employment Discrimination, Maritime/Longshore Liability and Medical Malpractice personal injury matters.
