An important, foundational approach to mediation ethics is, of course, thorough knowledge of the relevant codes, statutes, and rules in your jurisdiction. This session takes an alternate psychological approach to ethics and asks the question: How do good ethical mediators make bad ethical decisions? We will examine the range of psychological processes that lead people to engage in ethically questionable behaviors that are often inconsistent with their preferred moral code. We will explore how this ethical fading happens in the mediation profession and how to prevent it.

Employment Mediation Institute – May 18, 2019
This half-day program will feature a deep dive into the various legal developments that have resulted from our collective cultural self-examination triggered by the #MeToo movement and their practical impacts on employment mediators. Because of the heightened focus engendered by recent cultural shifts, emotional intelligence and awareness of societal and personal blind spots are key tools in the mediator’s toolbox. We will examine these, as well as generational differences among the people we work with. For example, how do the ways in which Boomers, Gen-Xers, and Millennials perceive the world affect communication and understanding among them?
The Southern California Mediation Association (SCMA) continues to provide training, skill-building, professional development, public outreach, networking, and charitable opportunities for its membership and the mediation community. To further these goals, the SCMA produced the inaugural Family Mediation Institute last year. In 2019 the SCMA is again proud to present the Family Mediation Institute to be held in Orange County on Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th at the Doubletree Hotel in Santa Ana. Due to the enthusiastic response last year, this years’ institute will be held at a larger venue that will comfortably accommodate more attendees and exhibitors. In addition, the 2019 two-day event will be expanded to include additional workshops and an innovative program that will allow attendees to become part of a live recorded podcast.
Date: Friday & Saturday, June 7-8, 2019
